13 to 16 April 2015, Havana, Cuba II International Congress on Urban, Suburban and Familial Agriculture

Offered by...Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropical “Alejandro de Humboldt” (INIFAT) (Institute for the Investigation of Tropical Agriculture "“Alejandro de Humboldt” ),Cuba's sustainable urban and intensive ag organization, in conjunction with the Food and Agriculture Organization FAO) of the United Nations (UN) .

They are currently planning to offer the  3rd such Congress in spring 2017.

ACTAF, the association that promotes sustainable agriculture in Cuba will be holding its biannual International Sustainable Agriculture Conference in May 2016. We will post more detailed information when we receive it from the organizers.

This Congress (detailed information below) is being held by INIFAT in conjunction with the UN FAO organization.

I attended an intensive urban ag shortcourse and tour with INIFAT in 2008 and it was wonderful, well organized and an encyclopedia of Cuban urban ag,  showcasing advanced sustainable and intensive urban ag techniques that I have not seen anywhere else, including in the US and East Africa. (In East Africa, Kampala, Uganda, for example, urban ag is at 100% but as yet, it does not have the technical, scientific, research and political, social support that the Cuban work does.)

Cuba's urban agriculture "organiponico," raised beds composed of 50% worm compost, are world famous, and songs have even been written about them. The island developed its own sustainable ag movement in response to the 1987 collapse of the Soviet Union, with which, Cuba, in the face of a US imposed global embargo imposed, did 87% of its trade at that time.

In 1997, Cuba's Organic Agriculture Group won the Right Livelihood Award for its work sustainably feeding its people during "the special period," as these hard times came to be known.

With normalization of diplomatic relations between the US and Cuba, the US and global food movements have an opportunity  to support Cuba's domestic and sustainable agriculture movements, as it is anticipated these movements will be under pressure "to modernize, " to "re-industrialize," with all the problems of which  we here in the US and the rest of the world  are well aware, instead of continuing  to build the most sustainable and socially just place to live,  according to the World Wildlife Fund. http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CB4QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fassets.panda.org%2Fdownloads%2Fliving_planet_report.pdf&ei=yl_SVJKBDc6yyASu_oGoCg&usg=AFQjCNFMMvBizM477yRgBq_YpD-V-9xPpw&sig2=5LAvVLyYOy0h82GgUPA-1A&bvm=bv.85076809,d.aWw

Tour information and more will be updated here as obtained.

Would you be so kind as to support us, Local2Global Advocates for Food Sovereignty,  with an acknowledgement of any support our work gives your beautiful work and/or a donation so we can continue to support your groundbreaking work with information about sustainable and urban ag  in Cuba, including events like these,  and other consciousness raising, cutting edge analyses and radio interviews with global peace, food and sustainability leaders like yourselves?
