2017 INIFAT Urban Agriculture Biannual Encuentro in Havana, Cuba
Just got back from the four day INIFAT (Instituto de Investigaciones Fundamentales en Agricultura Tropicaal "Alejandro de Humoldt") https://www.ecured.cu/INIFAT, Urban Agriculture Biannual encuentro in Havana, Cuba, April 2017. and WOW!, it was amazing! It included intensive urban agriculture training based on Cuba's experience, farm and organiponico visits, Paolo Friere and popular education, all aspects of the science of growing organic food intensively in an urban setting, dancing and eating! Participants were from Cuba, Mexico, Uruguay, China, the USA.
I organized a small delegation from the US, including the esteemed Director of the Vermont Carribean Institute, Dr. Margarita Fernandez, and her amazing assistant; Katrin Kusy from Austria, who used Paulo Friere's work to analyze agroecology movements in Cuba and Chiapis, Mexico and myself, Maria Whittaker, Program Director for the Kansas Chapter of Family Farm Defenders! https://fssg.blogspot.com/p/about-local-to-global-advocates-for.html

Because, the Cuban government does not permit discussions of 'food policy" in Cuba, I learned, I presented a well-received innovative and introspective paper asking: "Is the Food Movement a Spiritual Movement? rather than a discussion of US food policy. This presentation asked participants to enter into their own being to consider whether "consciousness" itself, rather than human beings, is the orchestrator of "the food movement,' with the purpose of bringing humanity home to the consciousness within them.
