The Lamp Self, Awareness, Pure Consciousness
The Lense in front of the Lamp The pure mind, close to the Self
(These two above form "the seer.")
The Film, which is a long series of separate Thoughts
photos.
The light passing through the lense and
falling on the screen The light of the Self emerging from the mind, through the senses and falling on the world. The Self illumines the Ego without being affected. (So the I can see itself.)
The various kinds of pictures appearing in the light The various form and names appearing as the objects perceived.
of the screen.
The mechanism which sets the film in motion. The divine law manifesting the latent tendencies of the mind. (So the seer can see itself.)
Just as the lamp illumines the lens, etc., while remaining unaffected, the Self illumines the ego, while remaining unaffected. Ego includes anxiety, fears.........all thoughts, mind activity.
Perhaps, so awareness can see itself? And grow itself?
Advaita teachers also sometimes use the comparison of Consciousness with a cosmic theatre that writes its own plays, creates its own decors and actors, and is its own audience as well. Ramesh Balsekar, for example, says: “Consciousness has produced this play. Consciousness has written the script. Consciousness is playing all the characters. And Consciousness is witnessing the play. It’s a one man show.” (Balsekar 2006: 245)
The first step in the spiritual path is to understand this difference and understand this pure awareness as you. Abiding as the witness or pure awareness and not getting identified with each thought, emotion, and sensation that arises and passes away is the direct form of meditation which leads to a complete cessation of the sense of a separate and consistent self. This finally leads to a oneness, in which the observer and the observed merge together, with no distinctions. (Please note that this merger is different from the initial identification).
