Jose Casimiro, Famiy Farmer and Founder of the Agroecologcial Family Dream Farm in Taguasco, Cuba, discusses what Cuban leadership needs to do build a truly sustainable, healthy and prosperous food system for his, the Cuban people.
He starts with discussing making the family farmer's life desireable to young people and prosperous to the farm family itself!!! Despite the common beliefs that the Cuban government is more progressive and radical than our government in the USA, actually, both governments have much in commom. In fact, as one of the leaders of Cuba's food sovereignty movement shared with me on one of my early visits to Cuba, the Cuban government was competing with the USA and actually wanted to be like the USA.
We here in the US can play a large role to support Cuba's food sovereignty movement by ourselves doing the very difficult work of truly transforming our own's nation horrendous reactionary food policy!!!! Unfortuatnely, most of the world, including the Cuban government, continues to follow the USA, thinking it is SUCCESSFULL; unaware that it is on the brink of environemental and many other kind of disasters. A leading Cuban food movement leader, told me back in the mid 2000's that the Cuban government was proud to import USA food, all that processed and canned food our food justice movements here in the US are rejecting!!!!
Cuba does not yet have a large food and health movement, but as Cuban citizens grow more ill just like us with food bourne diseases like diabetes, obesity et al, thier awareness, like ours is rising, that this processed food is not the way. We here in the USA really need to work hard to transform our own food system because sadly and ironically, the world is following us. And we are leading the world in the wrong direction!!! Even Cuba!
