How to combine agroecology with social development? How to combine the introduction of new technologies, modernity, within agroecology? How to conceive the mechanization of agroecological processes? These were some of the questions that the engineer Fernando Funes Monzote "put on the table" during a new exchange between the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, with a group of scientists and experts who work in terms of food sovereignty and nutritional education in the country.
An agronomist and PhD in Ecology of Production and Resource Conservation, after dedicating himself for more than 20 years to research and teaching, he decided to undertake, in practice, the path of agroecology and, since 2011, he has led the agroecological project family "Finca Marta", a space in which contributes to the transformation of the Cuban agri-food system from a local experience.
The knowledge of him not only has abundant scientific bases, but also practical ones. Hence the importance of the reflections that he shared in the Palace of the Revolution with the participants in the exchange, after the proposal of the Policy for Agroecology in Cuba was presented.
Agroecology - Funes Monzote underlined - is not at odds with mechanization, nor with the use of new practices and methods that are emerging, such as the most efficient systems of water use, but rather "is at odds with the misuse of technology, with the degradation of the environment and with the risks brought by new technologies that impose new challenges on us to transform the rural environment ».
And as a fundamental pillar for its development, it takes into account, in the first place, the traditional peasant experience, an inexhaustible source of knowledge that cannot be ignored in the development of our agriculture, he valued. "Modernity is going to bring us many things, but not the capacity and resilience that the farmer has, demonstrated over the years."
A policy for the future of the nation
Precisely how to arrive at a policy for agroecology in Cuba was one of the main problems discussed nine months ago, when experts and scientists from the sector were called for the first time to this type of meeting at the Palace of the Revolution, to find answers from science and innovation to agriculture problems in production
food.
The document presented in the profitable session, recognized the President of the Republic in dialogue with the participants, is the result of that first meeting. "With this system of work we are giving continuity to the proposals and no elements are left along the way," he stressed.
"This is an important contribution, it is one of the ways, although it is not the only one, by which we can reach a different state in the production of food for our population", reflected the Head of State during the exchange, which was directed by Deputy Prime Minister Inés María Chapman Waugh.
Although the proposal must still be submitted to a broad process of debate within the sector, Díaz-Canel recognized the work carried out to arrive at this first version, oriented, among other things, to innovation within agroecology, a way to also contribute to solving the complex problem of food production in the country.
Precisely on this path, as detailed by Doctor Giraldo Martín Martín, belonging to the Indio Hatuey Pastures and Forages Experimental Station, the policy proposal has among its main objectives that of contributing to the promotion of sustainable agriculture in harmony with the environment.
Working from agroecology is not new in Cuba, he said, it is something in which actions have been consolidated for a long time to face the problem of access to inputs that are important for production
