Cuban Vice President, Salvador Valdés Mesa, met farmers during a visit to the Vista Hermosa farm about the municipal development strategy and, particularly, the local food self-sufficiency policy of the Havana municipality of Guanabacoa.

Ania Lemus Prieto, president of the Government in the territory, announced the development potential in a municipality with 129.48 square kilometers and 123,341 inhabitants.

The production of food for municipal self-sufficiency was identified as the main line in the Municipal Development Strategy, in a territory that has 9,821.84 hectares of arable agricultural land, explained Lemus.

The Cuban Vice President, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, referred to the importance of, based on what is established by the Constitution, working for the sovereignty of the municipalities, "a broader concept, which includes sustainability."

Likewise, he indicated that the structure should be consolidated and work with cadres that are distinguished both by their knowledge and by their proactivity.

In the current national and international context, Valdés Mesa emphasized the need for the country to develop with its own efforts, based on its own resources and potential, using intelligence.

In the case of agricultural production, in which Guanabacoa has great potential, the Cuban Vice President called for combining agroecology with conventional agriculture, without losing the tradition and wisdom of farmers, linking this knowledge with established science.

In this regard, he said that it is possible to achieve results not only for national consumption, but also for tourism and exports.

Referring to Guanabacoa, the Cuban vice president indicated that it is a municipality with many endogenous resources and that it could be the first in the capital to achieve municipal self-sufficiency due to its results, population and land availability, although some crops would have to be received from other territories.

"We are developing new areas for the production of viands such as cassava and bananas, with 16 hectares only in March. We have 13.5 hectares per inhabitants, but we cannot confirm because we have to bring products to the province", highlighted Yosleidy de León Arriere , mayor of the municipality.

Ada Guzón Camporredondo, director of the Center for Local and Community Development (CEDEL), highlighted: "this is the municipality we want and we are building it."

Farm “Beautiful View”

At the “Vista Hermosa farm,” producer Misael Ponce Lugo, from the Emiliano Montes de Oca Credit and Services Cooperative, and one of the delegates from Havana to the VIII Party Congress, always has something new to show.

He has always been inclined to cattle raising, he also produces native pigs, various crops, fruit trees and guarantees the goat's milk that girls and boys from Guanabacoa who are intolerant to cows need.

With seven varieties of cane, two of king grass and mulberry, he guarantees with his resources 70% of the feeding of his animals.

With 67.7 hectares, the farm, which holds the status of 5th. Excellence, awarded by the National Program for Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture, has among its other lines of work the production of mozzarella cheese, from buffalo milk that it receives from the Bacuranao Agricultural Company, destined for tourism, not only for the demands of the capital, but also destined for hotels in other provinces.

In turn, it makes organic sausages, with good acceptance from international customers. Before the COVID-19 epidemic, six travel agencies brought visitors to the farm's restaurant, mainly cruise passengers.

For these and other activities, including raising rabbits, a group of 42 people work at Vista Hermosa. According to Ponce Lugo, these revenues have improved livestock, infrastructure and workers' wages.

His ongoing projects range from learning to artificially inseminate, the sowing of red tilapia fingerlings, which he intends to extend to seven other ponds, to the construction of six rustic farmhouses, as well as an attached profit center, so that the product comes out ready for marketing.
