Scientists show that VItamin D deficiency appears to increase mortality from the Coronavirus. https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2020/05/vitamin-d-appears-to-play-role-in-covid-19-mortality-rates/?fbclid=IwAR04qQoTcxWjq_XNRwriPmUEiDHwSEls4rhDHb_wsxJ2QvBPYTwRJmSN4qw
Which means that we African American and all people MAY benefit from adding Vitamin D rich foods (Always better to get nutrition from you food rather than from supplements.) to our diets, exposing ourselves to more sunlight or even tanning beds, where there is not much natural light, a natural source of Vitamin D, https://www.webmd.com/food-recipes/guide/calcium-vitamin-d-foods or taking Vitamin D supplements if changing your diet is not possible, here in Northern climates because our skin color blocks Vitamin D absorption. http://www.cooperinstitute.org/2019/09/24/african-americans-at-greatest-risk-of-vitamin-d-deficiency; https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16549493
This may partially or wholly explain why African Americans are dying at greater rates than European Americans in the USA from the Coronavirus. Vitamin D deficiency may also of course play a role in the morbidity rates of European descendants as well who ight also beneift from more Vitamin D. https://news.northwestern.edu/stories/2020/05/vitamin-d-appears-to-play-role-in-covid-19-mortality-rates/?fbclid=IwAR04qQoTcxWjq_XNRwriPmUEiDHwSEls4rhDHb_wsxJ2QvBPYTwRJmSN4qw; https://www.wsj.com/articles/vitamin-d-and-coronavirus-disparities-11587078141
Vitamin D deficiency has long been identified as a POSSIBLE cause of many health differences for we tan, brown and black skinned African American peoples as well as the cause of health problems for all peoples. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/16549493
African Americans have always however, had lower rates of osteoporosis and skin cancer than European Americans despite our lack of Vitamin D. So perhaps we have a totally different physiology in this respect. perhhttps://academic.oup.com/jn/article/136/4/1126/4664238
In SubSaharan Africa, where at least some of our African American ancestors originated, our skin color protected us from the high levels of sunshine, but here in North American and the global north in general, we suffer from Vitamin D deficiency because our skin color blocks Vitamin D absorption. Vitamin D rich diets and supplements for us have always been recommended because of that. Id.

Perhaps, the coronavirus makes Vitamin D rich foods or Vitamin D a critical supplement currently for African Americans now, but it has always been recommended for us because of its impact on other health disparities!.

ReplyDeleteI Like to add one more important thing here, The Vitamin D market is expected to reach more than US$ 1.8 billion by 2026, at a CAGR of 7.0%.
ReplyDeleteAnd actually we need not use vitamin D supplements but rather can expose ourelves to the sun more often , including tanning salons!!! LOL!!! I did it one very grey winter in COlumbus, Ohio and it defintely imporved ny mood and energy. Many studies on all of this. There are bright birhgt bright therapeutic lights for treatment of depression as well. Called SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder; it can be treated by exposure to more bright light including bright sunlight. WHen I moved to Kansas City from Columbus, Ohio, I watched my mood energy lelvel and happiness increase as well. THere was significant more sunlight in Kansa city thatn in COlumbus, Ohio. Living in Cancun one winter waws the happiest and most active winter I can recall as well!!!
